User Guide

This guide contains an overview of Package Manager’s web-based user interface, as well as instructions for configuring your data science environment to install packages or extensions from Posit Package Manager.

Posit Public Package Manager

Posit Public Package Manager is a free, hosted instance of Package Manager. Posit does not provide professional support for it. Post questions in the Posit Community.

Rate limits

Posit Public Package Manager accepts up to 15,000 requests from each IP address in any 5-minute period. All clients that share an IP address, such as an office network or a pool of CI runners, share this limit.

Requests over the limit fail with the HTTP status 429 Too Many Requests. The response includes two headers:

  • Retry-After: the number of seconds to wait before you retry.
  • X-RateLimit-Limit: the current limit. Posit can change the limit between releases of this guide.

If your clients reach the limit, reduce parallel downloads or spread large jobs over time. For sustained high-volume use, such as large CI fleets, run your own Package Manager server.
